Description: A literary and photography magazine published annually by the Washington County Arts Council.
Submission Needs: short fiction, poems, black-and-white photographs that have not been published previously. We prefer short stories, but will consider a novel excerpt if it works as an independent piece. We accept creative nonfiction.
Guidelines: We consider material from Sept. 1 to Feb. 1 each year. Stories must be available on disc and hard copy. SASE.
Word Length: Fiction: under 5,000 words. Poetry: max of 30 lines. Submit one piece of fiction per reading period and up to 3 poems. Photos: up to 3 black-and-white prints.
Payment: Fiction: $100 per story plus 2 copies. Poetry: $25 per poem plus 2 copies. Print: $25 for each.

CutBank Magazine -
Description: CutBank is Montana's premier literary journal from the University of Montana, published twice yearly.
Guidelines: Deadline for spring issue is Nov. 15, April 15 for fall issue. SASE. Manuscripts typed, paginated, name on each page, paper clips. Let us know if a piece has been submitted previously.
Submission Needs: Interested in art, poetry, fiction by well-known or previously unpublished authors.
Word Length: Fiction should be only 1 story at a time, up to 40 pages. Poets may submit up to 4 poems. Artists/photographers may submit copies of up to 5 works at a time.
Rights: Rights revert to author upon publication.

Exquisite Corpse: A Journal of Letters & Life -
Description: We are a blurring of genres between poetry and prose, lyric and reportage, essay and manifesto.
Guidelines: No multiple submissions. Send submissions as attachments using Rich Text Format. Include all submissions in one attachment. Put name of document after your last name. No Wordstar docs. Put contact info in attachment and on letter. Convert footnotes into endnotes. Use double dash instead of em dash. Send CDs through the mail.
Submission Needs: Poetry, fiction, letters, essays, travel-writing, news, drama, mixed genre media, art, music/sound.
Word Length: 15 double-spaced pages max for prose. Poetry 10 pages max and can be single-spaced.
Rights: We get exclusive first time on-line electronic rights. After we publish, all rights revert to author. If work is published in the future, we ask for a credit line.

Description: Founded in 2000, failbetter.com is an online quarterly magazine published in the spirit of a traditional literary journal.
Guidelines: On submissions line, include 'Submission' in header. Include fiction and poetry in body of email. No attached files. Query if submitting in MS Word or .rtf format. Query first for art. SASE. Submissions must be in e-format. No multiple subs.

Ontario Review, The -
Description: Founded in 1974, Ontario Review is one of the longest-lived literary journals today. Conceived of as a North American Journal of the Arts, it was intended to bridge what Joyce Carol Oates and Raymond J. Smith, Americans teaching in Canada at the time, felt to be a widening gap between the two literary/artistic cultures.
Guidelines: Bio, SASE.
Submission Needs: Fiction, poetry, personal essays, photography, graphics, drama, interviews with prominent authors.
Payment: $20 per printed page.

Description: A non-profit journal publishing art and literature, especially with multi-media and progressive focus.
Submission Needs: None needed at this time. Material ranges from painting, video, music, photography to poetry, plays, short fiction, and non-fiction.
Guidelines: Be original, be creative. E-mail submission only. Please contact submissions@pavejournal.org for more information. Or visit the web-site at www.PAVEjournal.org. Do not flood, enormous submissions will be ignored.

Tarpaulin Sky -
Description: An online literary magazine containing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, art and reviews. Published quarterly in multiple text and audio formats including downloadable PDF, Real Audio and MP3.
Guidelines: We accept e-mail, snail mail (SASE) but no e-mail attachments. We accept simultaneous submissions if we are informed. We don't accept previously published work. Include brief bio with submission. Send 3-5 poems. See website for more info.

Payment: We operate at a loss. It is a labor of love but even love can't pay our contributors. Maybe someday, maybe soon, but not today.

We reserve right to publish & reproduce material in electronic & print formats, while work is in the current issue and thereafter. Works will be archived online. Tulane Review, The -
Description: The Tulane Review is a biannual, national literary journal seeking quality poetry, prose and artwork for its Spring 2003 publication. Each submission is read by a review board. Accepted pieces are nominated by the board and then chosen by the editor. A $100 prize will be awarded to one outstanding piece in each category as determined by a qualified judge.
Guidelines: We are a print only publication and do not return manuscripts. Mail manuscript to address below with a cover letter and a SASE. There is a $2 submission fee per literary work. For art work: submission fee is $15/4 pieces, $2 for each additional piece. The submission deadline for the Spring 2003 edition is February 21, 2003.
