Description: Covers ethical issues and dilemmas, coverage that falls short, occasional profiles, trends in the industry, etc.
Submission Needs: Drop Cap: The front-of-the-book section where most freelancers and writers break into the magazine.
Word Length: The pieces are anywhere from 500 to 1,000 words. Features run from 2,000 to 5,000 words.
Book Reviews: If you've written a book, you're welcome to send a copy to the Book Editor for review consideration. We prefer queries to completed articles.

Description: We are interested in receiving forward-looking articles on all aspects of the written word that demonstrate the writer's grasp of contemporary writing and current editorial/publishing policies.
Word Length: Articles should be 500-1,000 words although features up to 2,000 words and mini-series would be considered.
Payment: £20 per 1,000 words on publication.

The Swamp -
Description: A seething miasma of stories and articles, issues and causes designed to challenge, enlighten, or entertain. More of a showcase for writers than a strictly formatted magazine.
Guidelines: Submit only through website. Choose the correct category. Must be a registered user to The Swamp to submit. Use_underscores_for italics and *stars* for bold. Accepts reprints and older pieces.
Submission Needs: Any literary work, genre, poetry, articles.
Payment: Not a paying market, but when we receive a submission we think should be seeking paying markets, we let the author know.
Word Length: Up to 5k (soft).
Rights: Exclusive electronic rights for six months.

Description: The Writer is dedicated to helping and inspiring professional and aspiring writers.
Guidelines: The best way to get an assignment is to send a query letter with clips of previously published work.
Word Length: Feature articles run 1,600-3,000 words and Columns and departments run 800 to 1,200 words.
Payment: Our rates for articles range from $50 for book reviews to $200 to $400 for columns and $300 to $500 for features.

Guidelines: We do seek occasional writers who can produce how-to and professional articles as well as personal essays on the craft of writing. There is no need to query us before submitting.
Word Length: Please keep all articles and essays to a minimum of 800 words and a maximum of 1500 words.
Rights: The Writer's Life buys exclusive electronic rights for 30 days and non-exclusive thereafter.
Payment: As The Writer's Life has just moved from a non-paying status to a paying status, we can only pay $5 for each accepted submission.

Description: Writer's Digest is a monthly handbook for those who want to write better and get published, whether they write fiction or nonfiction.
Guidelines: Our How-to articles are our mainstay and generally run 800-1,200 words. InkWell features short (500 words or less), tightly written trend stories, ideas, reviews, essays, news, inspiration, fun facts for writers and more. Prefer queries over unsolicited manuscripts.
Payment: For manuscripts, we pay 30-50 cents per word, on acceptance.
Rights: First world rights for one-time use and non-commercial electronic use.

Writers’ Journal -
Description: The Writers’ Journal is a bimonthly magazine for writers, including professional communicators, self/independent publishers, part-time or full-time freelancers, screenwriters, desk-top publishers, authors, editors, teachers, and poets.
Word Length: Several feature articles of 1200-2200 words, are published each issue.
Payment: The Journal buys about 25 poems a year, maximum length: 15 lines. We pay on a variable scale, depending on budget, $5.00/poem for one-time rights.
