Contests & Awards - May ( April | Contests & Awards |June )
Glimmer Train Press Inc. - Open to all writers, all themes, all lengths. (We don’t publish stories for children and we don’t publish works longer than 20,000 words, I’m sorry.) We do consider unpublished novel excerpts if they feel like complete stories. Multiple submissions are fine. (You can send more than one submission per competition, if you like, or submit the same story for different categories, if it qualifies). No simultaneous submissions, please.
Rights: we are purchasing first-publication rights.
Prizes: 1st place wins $2,000, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, 20 copies of that issue, and a one-year subscription. 2nd/ 3rd-place: $1,000/$600, respectively.
Payment: Reading fee: $20 per story.
Deadline: Dates: May 1 – July 15. (Results will be posted on October 15.) November 1 – January 15. (Results will be posted on April 10.)
The SouthWest Writers' Contest -
Description: All categories, except poetry, are $29.00 for SWW members and $44 for non-members; Poetry fees are $18 for SWW members, and $28 for non-members. First, second, and third place winners receive cash prizes of $150, $100, and $50, respectively. Deadline is May 1.
Akron Poetry Prize -
Description: The final selection will be made by a nationally prominent poet. Manuscripts must be typed, preferably double-spaced, and consecutively numbered, for a total length between 60 and 100 pages.
Prize: The winning poet will receive $1,000 and publication of his or her book.
Payment: An entry fee of $25 is required for each manuscript submission.

Deadline: Manuscripts must be postmarked between May 15 and June 30
Bechtel Prize - Description: Possible topics include: contemporary issues in classroom teaching; innovative approaches to teaching literary forms and genres; and the intersection between literature and imaginative writing.
Word Length: Must be 5,000 words, or less.
Prize: You could win $3,500, and publication in Teachers & Writers Magazine.

Bordighera Poetry Prize -
Description: The prize (consisting of book publication in bilingual edition by Bordighera, Inc.) is dedicated to finding the best manuscripts of poetry in English by an American poet of Italian descent, to be translated upon selection by the judges into quality translations of modern Italian, for the benefit of American poets of Italian ancestry and the preservation of the Italian language.
Word Length: Poems must be 48 pages or less.
Prize: You could win $2,000 ($1,000 to winning poet; $1,000 for commissioned translator).

Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition -
Description: Seeks original, unpublished entries of up to 3,000 words; no genre or theme restrictions.
Prize: $1000 first prize, $500 second prize, $500 third prize.
Payment: $10 per story.
Deadline: May 1st; $15 per story after May 1st.
Room of One's Own - Annual Fiction and Poetry Contest -
Description: $1,500 in Prizes. Winners will be published in Room of One's Own. Other manuscripts may be published.
Payment: C$27 (per Canadian entry) US$39 (per US entry).
War Poetry Contest -
This contest seeks today's best poems on the theme of war. We will award $3,000 in prizes, up from $2,250 in 2004. Submit 1-3 original, unpublished poems on the theme of war. Their combined length should not exceed 500 lines.
