Anthem Essay Contest -
Description: For 9th and 10th Graders. Mail your essay with stapled cover.
Prizes: FIRST PRIZE: $2,000, 3 SECOND PRIZES: $500, 5 THIRD PRIZES: $200.
Word Length: Essay must be no fewer than 600 and no more than 1,200 words.

Flyway -
Description: 6th Annual Flyway Sweet Corn
Prize. $150 and a book bag of Iowa sweet corn for top entries in each category: fiction, nonfiction (maximum: 4,000 words) and poetry.
Payment: Reading fee: $18.
Deadline March 1st.
The Washington Prize -
Description: The Word Works will award an American citizen or resident of the United States poet $1,500 and book publication for a volume of original poetry. Submit a manuscript of 48 to 64 pages.
Payment: Enclose entry fee: $20 US drawn on a US bank only, payable to The WORD WORKS.

Tom Howard/John H. Reid Short Story Contest -
Description: an original short story, essay, or other work of prose. Tom Howard will judge. 8,000-word limit per entry. No limits on style or theme.
Word Length: 8,000-word limit per entry.
Prize: A top prize of $1,000 and publication in an anthology by Tom Howard Books is given annually. $2,575 will be awarded in all.
Payment: The reading fee per entry is $10.
Deadline: Entries should be postmarked by March 31.
